Watch Deacon’s (5) amazing transformation:

Learning to read used to be a struggle, now he’s best in his class

“After playing Poio, very quickly after, he started coming home with certificates saying that he’d been the best in class or scored top marks in his phonics test. It’s a phenomenal change in a very, very short amount of time,” says Deacon’s dad, Ian.

Deacon is a five-year-old boy who loves his superheroes, cars, and generally being an active, fun little boy with lots of energy.

After his first year in primary school, he’d excelled in maths and science, impressing both his teachers and parents. Learning how to read, on the other hand, proved to be a challenge for Deacon. It made him upset, and he lost his motivation to continue practicing.

Ian tried all sorts of different techniques and exhausted everything that he knew, but ended up feeling frustrated himself when nothing worked. He simply didn’t know what else to do in order to help his son.

“I do want him to succeed, and obviously reading is such an essential part of that. Whether it was that he was afraid of making mistakes or he felt silly from not being able to do it… It’s very hard to keep pushing someone without upsetting them. Although you’re trying to be patient, it’s really hard when you know that he’s such a clever boy”.

This story is something many parents can relate to. However, Ian then discovered a digital game he thought looked promising, and decided to give it a go. When Deacon started playing the learn-to-read game Poio, everything turned around completely. After just a few months, Deacon was suddenly able read stories to his older sister and parents, and most importantly: He enjoyed it!

“The best thing is that the game has enabled Deacon to learn this by himself. He’s a lot more confident with it now,” say Ian.
